The fishing around Tampa has been steady with lots of action and there have been enough keeper fish around to harvest for a meal. My recent Tampa Fishing Charters have been producing trout, sheepshead, ladyfish and sharks with the occasional pompano making a sporadic entrance. I say this all the time but February fishing is a take what she gives type of mentality, meaning if your on a good bite, dont move it may ot be that good again the rest of the trip. On yesterdays trip we caught a wide variety of fish, Sharks, ladyfish, sheepshead, pompano, snapper and trout. The bite remains strong as long as you fish the strong bite.
Baby sheepshead
Sheepshead have been on the bridge pilings and dock posts. Look for the dock s that are old and pilings encrusted with thick barnacles. These docks tend to hold the most sheepshead and sometimes you can pluck an occasional redfish or two. As the day wears on look for the snapper to warm up to your offerings of fresh diced shrimp. Morning bite consists of rod bending action with lady fish and trout with an inconstant pompano bite. The trout have been mixed in with the ladyfish so weeding through ladyfish to get a few trout proves to be great fun in between trout bites. Plus a few fresh ladyfish are need to chum the sharks in. Drifitng free-lined and corked ladyfish chunks int the deep cuts has been producing black tip sharks and often times a spinner shark strikes. While the black tips have strong strikes and hard runs , the spinner sharks do just that, spin. Its name describes perfectly this sharks feeding strategy.
