No Fishing Charters Today
Brisk morning air fills my lungs as I launch the skiff, steam is rising off the water alerting me the water is warmer than the air, the sun has already made its warming presence known and I can feel the air temperature is on the rise. No Tampa Fishing Charters today, it’s a fun fish day! This is some down time for me and my son Jake, a chance to go fish for nothing other than some bragging rights, in one of our favorite fishing holes, the tide was nearing its lowest point as Jake advanced the throttle and turned south towards the intercostal waters of Sarasota bay.
Going under a couple of Bridges, I noticed the fish shacks and Marinas on the eastern shore line were void of any life, everyone was inside soaking up the heat, but this is Florida, the high is predicted to be in the mid 70’s, they’ll be out soon , I thought. Still heading south we took a short cut on the back side of sisters key to avoid the big boats in the intercostal waterway. And settled onto the flats north of long bar.
Tossing artificials we began with ladyfish but, moved around until the trout began to cooperate. Using DOA jerk worms we caught and released over 30 before moving on to fish for redfish as the water began to rise.
Tossing gold spoons it didn’t take ling until we were in the midst of a shallow flat and a small school of redfish were tailing off in the distance. At times, exiting the boat is the most effective way to stalk these fish, today was no different. As we approached the school and neared casting range the fish had no idea we were there. First Jake made a long cast and hooked up, as the school spooked to the right I fired an accurate cast in front and stuck one myself. This continued for about 30 minutes and then the water reached a level where the tailers are hard to see. We loaded up and were on our way home long before the predicted high of 70 degrees. Great Day off!
